Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests

An integral part of the communities is the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, home to one of the largest Ponderosa Pine stands in the world. The 2-million acre forest is home to more than 410 species of wildlife. Each year, the 35 lakes, 680 miles of streams, 36 campgrounds, and over 950 miles of trails are visited over 5 million times. Camping facilities range from primitive to fully-developed sites with showers, hookups, and handicap access. A winter recreation area that includes sledding areas, cross-country skiing trails, and rentals of snowmobiles is also available on a seasonal basis. For additional information, contact the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests Supervisor's office at (928) 333-3401, or visit them online at www.fs.fed.us/r3/asnf.

Cultural Tourism

A strong sense of appreciation and preservation for historical ancestry is evident in this area of the White Mountains. The "Trail of Many Tracks" is an historical driving tour that highlights the prehistorical and historical aspects of the Little Colorado River Plateau and White Mountains of east-central Arizona, in an effort to promote heritage-based tourism. A variety of museums offer a sense of the pioneer spirit and wild west excitement of the area. From the pre-history of archeological sites such as Casa Malpais, Raven Site, and Rattlesnake Ruins, to the historic homes found along tree-lined streets—a sense of historic pride and preservation is recognized.

Fine Arts

The Towns of Eagar and Springerville have active community arts organizations with excellent facilities that provide a number of fine arts activities for visitors and residents alike. Endorsed and sponsored by the Arizona Commission on the Arts, many professional performing artists are featured throughout the year, and the area has attracted many artists to settle and work in the creative and relaxing environment of the White Mountains. From country western to classics to rock and roll—entertainment abounds!
